The fastest way to improve aim in CS2 is to fix crosshair placement and counter-strafing before training flicks, because those two habits decide most ordinary duels. Spend about 30 minutes a day practising them in order, then spray control, then deathmatch.
Mouse skill still matters, but it comes last. A well-placed crosshair needs less correction, and a stationary player's first bullet is far more likely to land where it is aimed.
How do you improve crosshair placement in CS2?
Keep the crosshair at head height, on the part of the next angle an enemy would appear from. The aim is to need only a small adjustment when someone peeks.
- Aim at the next angle, not the corridor. As you move, your crosshair should already be on the next spot that can see you.
- Stay off walls. Standing a little away from a corner widens your view, so you see an enemy sooner and need less movement.
- Stop checking the floor. Low aim is the most common fault, particularly when moving between positions.
- Allow for height changes. Stairs and ramps change where a head will be, so adjust as you walk.
A simple drill is to load a map with no bots and walk your usual routes slowly. At each corner, ask where a head would first appear, and put your crosshair there. It feels slow, but it builds the habit without any pressure.
How do you counter-strafe in CS2?
Counter-strafing means tapping the opposite movement key to cancel your momentum, then firing. If you are moving left by holding A, tap D, then shoot. Release A and your character keeps sliding briefly, so simply letting go is slower.
Moving badly hurts accuracy. Community-compiled weapon data puts AK-47 moving inaccuracy at roughly 27 times its standing figure, and it is similar for the M4A4. The penalty scales with speed, so being nearly stopped matters. Treat those figures as approximate, because they come from one reference and Valve does not publish them.
Two errors are common. Holding the opposite key too long pushes you the other way, and firing as you tap catches you still slowing down. Practise with this pattern:
- Strafe left, tap right, fire one shot.
- Strafe right, tap left, fire one shot.
- Repeat at a wall until the rhythm is automatic, then against bots.
Can the new crosshair help you check your accuracy?
Yes. Valve's September 2026 update changed the default crosshair to Dynamic Quad, and the new dynamic styles show real weapon spread and inaccuracy. That makes them useful as practice feedback: if the crosshair is still open when you fire, you had not settled. Static styles remain available for matches, and the choice is personal.
How do you control spray in CS2?
Recoil follows a fixed pattern with random spread on top, so you can learn to counter it by pulling the mouse in the opposite direction. On an AK-47, the first shots climb almost straight up, and then the pattern drifts sideways. References put that climb anywhere from about 5 to 10 bullets. Pull down first, then follow the sideways drift.
Learn one rifle at a time. Each has its own pattern and a different magazine:
| Weapon | Magazine | Spray notes |
|---|---|---|
| AK-47 | 30 | Strong early climb, then sideways drift |
| M4A4 | 30 | Recovers faster than the AK-47, according to one reference |
| M4A1-S | 20 | Tight grouping, easier to control, fewer bullets |
| Galil AR | 35 | Bigger magazine, lower price |
| FAMAS | 25 | Early shots drift to the right |
Should you tap, burst or spray?
Match the choice to distance. This is a rule of thumb rather than a fixed law, and it depends on the gun:
| Range | Technique | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Long | Single taps | Lets accuracy recover between shots |
| Medium | Bursts of 2 to 4 | Short bursts control recoil, with a pause to reset |
| Close | Full spray with control | Time matters more than perfect accuracy |
Recoil has a larger effect at range, so the same pull covers more distance on a far target. That is why bursts usually beat long sprays beyond close range.
What changed for recoil and reloading in 2026?
Three updates affect older advice. In April 2026, Valve changed recoil camera motion to match CS:GO more closely, while stating that bullet trajectories should continue to match CS2. Spray therefore may look different in older videos, even though the bullets should land the same.
In March 2026, reloading magazine-fed weapons changed so that any remaining bullets in the magazine are discarded, and reserve ammo was retuned per weapon. Reloading after two shots now throws away the rest of that magazine, so reload deliberately and watch your reserve. In September 2026 a silent reload was added by holding the reload key, which is slower, and an October update added a toggle option for it. Each of these could change again, so keep an eye on the update notes.
Which CS2 workshop maps should you use for aim training?
These three were all live on the Steam Workshop under these names in late October 2026. Check each page before subscribing, because they are community-run and can change.
| Map (exact Workshop title) | Use it for |
|---|---|
| Aim Botz - Aim Training (CS2) | Repeated shots on bots |
| Recoil Master - Spray Training (CS2) | Learning spray patterns |
| Yprac Hub by Yesber | Prefire routes and map-specific practice |
Aim Botz and Recoil Master both state in their descriptions that not every feature may work yet. Also, since January 2026, community maps are limited to a smaller list of allowed console commands, so a command from an older tutorial might not run.
What is a good daily CS2 aim routine?
Published routines mostly range from 30 to 90 minutes. Around 30 minutes is realistic for most people and leaves time to actually play.
| Time | Activity | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 5 min | Aim Botz | One-shot headshots, not speed |
| 5 min | Empty map walk or Yprac Hub | Head height at each corner |
| 5 min | Counter-strafe reps | Tap, settle, one shot |
| 5 min | Recoil Master | One rifle only, per session |
| 10 min | Deathmatch | Apply one habit at a time |
Choose one theme for your deathmatch, for example no shot while moving. Scoreboard results matter less than whether you kept the habit. After a match, count the deaths you can trace to low placement or firing on the move. That tells you what to drill tomorrow.
Avoid changing your sensitivity often, as this works against the repetition you are building. If yours has never felt right, the best CS2 settings guide explains eDPI and the trade-offs. Better aim also needs a rifle to use it with, so read the CS2 economy guide for when to save.
FAQ
How long does it take to improve aim in CS2?
No verified timeline exists, as it depends on your starting level and how consistently you practise. Short daily sessions are generally recommended over occasional long ones, because the goal is building habits.
Is deathmatch enough for aim training?
It is useful for applying skills against unpredictable players, but it gives few clean repetitions of a single skill. Pairing it with focused drills covers both.
Should I copy a pro player's crosshair or sensitivity?
Copying rarely fixes aim on its own, and those settings change over time. Crosshair values also now use a new pixel-based system, so older shared values may look different on your setup.
