In CS2, buy when your team can afford rifles and armor together, and save when buying now would break your next round. Each player earns $3,250 or $3,500 for a win and $1,400 to $3,400 for a loss, so most buy decisions come down to counting two rounds ahead.
Figures come from Valve's update notes where available and community references elsewhere, current to late October 2026. Valve can change them at any time, so treat your buy menu as the final word.
How much money do you get each round in CS2?
| Event | Money per player | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Start of a half | $800 | Regulation only |
| Win by elimination or time | $3,250 | Standard round win |
| T win by bomb detonation | $3,500 | |
| CT win by defuse | $3,500 | |
| Loss, counter at 0 | $1,400 | For example, a loss straight after winning the pistol round |
| Loss, counter at 1 | $1,900 | Losing the pistol round pays this |
| Loss, counter at 2 | $2,400 | |
| Loss, counter at 3 | $2,900 | |
| Loss, counter at 4 or more | $3,400 | Maximum |
| T loss with a plant, then a defuse | +$600 | All Ts; reduced from $800 in May 2024 |
| Planting the bomb | +$300 | Planter only |
| Each T killed, Competitive modes | +$50 | Every CT, even in a lost round; added July 2025 |
| Money cap | $16,000 | Anything above it is lost |
Some guides still list $800 for the plant bonus. Valve's May 2024 notes set it at $600 when the bomb is defused, and no later Valve note changes it.
How does the loss bonus work in CS2?
The game keeps a loss counter for each team. It goes up one with each loss and down one with each win, with a minimum of 0. Teams begin every half with the counter at 1, which is why a lost pistol round pays $1,900.
A win does not reset the counter, and some older guides still get this wrong. Say your team loses three rounds from the start of a half, wins one, then loses again. That loss pays $2,900 rather than $1,400.
There is one important exception. Community references report that a T who survives when time runs out with no plant receives no loss money at all, although they word the details differently. Valve's recent notes do not restate this rule, so check your next-round figure in the buy menu.
What do weapons and equipment cost in CS2?
Recent changes to the M4A4, FAMAS, MP7, MP5-SD and Incendiary come from Valve's notes. Other prices come from a community reference, so confirm them in the buy menu.
| Item | Price | Kill reward |
|---|---|---|
| Glock-18, USP-S, P2000 | $200 | $300 |
| P250, Dual Berettas | $300 | $300 |
| Tec-9, Five-SeveN, CZ75-Auto | $500 | $300 |
| Desert Eagle | $700 | $300 |
| MAC-10 | $1,050 | $600 |
| MP9 | $1,250 | $600 |
| UMP-45 | $1,200 | $600 |
| MP7, MP5-SD | $1,400 | $600 |
| SSG 08 | $1,700 | $300 |
| Galil AR | $1,800 | $300 |
| FAMAS | $1,950 | $300 |
| AK-47 | $2,700 | $300 |
| M4A4, M4A1-S | $2,900 | $300 |
| AWP | $4,750 | $100 |
| Kevlar / Kevlar + Helmet | $650 / $1,000 | n/a |
| Defuse kit | $400 | n/a |
| Flash / Smoke / HE | $200 / $300 / $300 | $300 |
| Molotov / Incendiary | $400 / $500 | $300 |
Older tables may show the CZ75-Auto at a $100 reward. Valve raised it to $300 in April 2024, and cut the XM1014 reward from $900 to $600 in the same update.
How much does a full buy cost?
Using the prices above, a rifle with helmet armor costs $3,700 on T with the AK-47 and $3,900 on CT with an M4. A CT who adds a kit reaches $4,300. A typical utility set of two flashes, a smoke and a fire grenade adds $1,100 on T and $1,200 on CT, for totals of about $4,800 and $5,500. You can trim utility if money is short, but you need both a rifle and armor for a true buy round.
When should you eco in CS2?
Eco when spending now would stop your team buying together next round, and when your chance of winning this round with weak weapons is low. Most saves follow a loss with money too tight for a full buy.
Here is the usual maths for a team that loses the pistol round and has spent its $800:
| Round | Income | Money if you fully save |
|---|---|---|
| Round 2 | $1,900 from the pistol loss | $1,900 |
| Round 3 | $2,400 from a second loss | $4,300 |
$4,300 is enough for an AK-47 and helmet armor with $600 to spare, or an M4, helmet armor and a kit with nothing left. Ts who planted in the pistol round have $600 more, and CTs earn $50 per T killed.
A useful detail is built into the game: since April 2024, the buy menu title bar shows the minimum money you are guaranteed next round. Before you buy, subtract your purchase from your current money, add that guarantee, and see whether you can rifle up next round.
When should you force buy?
A force buy spends most or all of your money with no full buy behind it. It costs you the next round if you lose, so it needs a reason. These are the usual ones:
- You will lose the half or match if you lose this round.
- The enemy is low on money or weapons, so an SMG or armor gives you real odds.
- Your team's loss counter is high, so a failed force still pays well.
That last point is worth stressing. A force at $3,400 loss bonus hurts far less than one at $1,400. Commit as a team, because one player saving while four force weakens the attempt.
What should you do after winning the pistol round?
Buy for the kills. SMGs pay $600 per kill, against $300 for rifles, so they build money quickly if the enemy is on pistols. The risk is a forcing enemy with armor and close-range weapons, where an SMG loses much of its edge. Winning also lowers your counter to 0, so a loss in round 2 pays only $1,400.
Do not spend so much that you cannot rifle up in round 3.
How does overtime money work in MR12?
CS2 regulation is 12 rounds per half, 24 maximum, and 13 wins takes the match. In Premier, a 12-12 score leads to one overtime of six rounds, three per side, with four wins needed. If it ties 3-3, the match ends as a 15-15 draw. Tournaments can use repeated overtime sets instead. Players get a fresh $10,000 at each overtime half by default, tournaments can set other amounts, and items from the last regulation round do not carry over.
Standard Competitive ends in a draw at 12-12, according to current community references, and the game's current Competitive config does not enable overtime. Valve's 2023 announcement did mention overtime for Competitive, so older articles may say otherwise.
Since March 2026, reloading a magazine-fed weapon also discards whatever is left in the magazine, so reserve ammo needs more care. To get more from each bullet, see how to improve your aim in CS2.
FAQ
What is the maximum loss bonus in CS2?
It is $3,400 per player, reached when the team's loss counter is at 4 or higher. From the start of a half, that means the fourth loss in a row.
Does winning a round reset the loss bonus?
No. A win reduces the loss counter by one. Valve introduced this rule in 2019, and it helps teams on a losing streak keep buying after a single win.
How much money do you start with in CS2?
You start each regulation half with $800. Default overtime money is $10,000, though tournaments may use a different figure. Settings that affect how you see the buy menu and game are covered in the best CS2 settings guide.
